Newcastle United recruit ‘exceptional operator’ to top role amid exciting plans for St James’ Park

Newcastle United have appointed Brad Miller as the club’s new chief operating officer [COO].

The new arrival brings with him an ‘outstanding track record in operational and development projects’, according to Magpies chief executive Darren Eales, which will no doubt come in handy as the North East outfit look to transform St James’ Park in the coming years.

Miller arrives in Newcastle after leaving infrastructure operator Ferrovial Vertiports. The new St James’ Park board member has been the company’s managing director for Europe, Middle East and Africa since 2022.

Miller is a former chartered surveyor and has worked on major transformational projects over the years, including being involved in the £1.3 billion refurbishment of Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2 during his time at Manchester Airports Group. Miller also served as director of East Midlands Airport and operations director at London Stansted.

The role will see Miller work closely with chief executive Eales as he gets involved in various departments on Tyneside, including internal facilities, ticketing and running the club’s day-to-day operations. He will also lead the club’s capital investment strategy.

The COO roles at Premier League rivals Manchester City and Chelsea are held by unknown faces Roel De Vries and Jason Gannon, while Collette Roche fills the position at Manchester United. Roche arrives at Old Trafford after leaving her role as chief executive of Manchester Airports Group in 2018 and will be familiar with Miller’s work.

In a statement confirming the appointment, Newcastle chief executive Eales said: “Brad is an exceptional operator and we are delighted to welcome him to the Newcastle United family. He brings with him outstanding results in operational and development projects, and his creative, collaborative and strategic leadership will be a great asset to us as we continue to strive for best-in-class in everything we do.”

Sam Miller added: “I look forward to helping Newcastle United move forward with their ambitious, sustainable development plans and working alongside such dedicated and passionate people. This is an incredibly exciting and unique time for everyone involved with the club.”

Newcastle have big plans to expand and transform St James’ Park as they try to meet increasing demand for tickets. A new state-of-the-art, ‘best-in-class’ club store is being built on site, with significant renovations taking place behind the scenes over the summer.
