Bungie responds after Destiny 2 The Final Shape “accidentally went live on PS5” early

Update May 31, 2024: Bungie released a statement after “part” of Destiny 2’s The Final Shape expansion “accidentally went live” on the PS5 streaming service.

The studio acknowledged that spoilers were being shared online and that a “small group of players” were able to access the campaign, collections, echoes and “other reward information”.

Accordingly, the team is advising players who don’t want to spoil the experience to “be very careful” on social media ahead of The Final Shape’s release next week, and is asking those who have seen the spoilers to “be considerate of others.”

“We thank all members of our community who have already helped us by reporting the leak and those who are actively working to prevent more experience from being shared before the scheduled date,” the statement concluded.

“It’s always extremely difficult when our team’s hard work is revealed so early, but we’re still excited to experience the full release together on June 4th.”

The original story is as follows.

30 May 2024: Eyes up, Guardian – The Final Shape DLC has been leaked online after the expansion was temporarily available earlier today.

As has been reported dozens of times in the Destiny 2 subreddit community and beyond, “all” of The Final Shape DLC was “playable”—though some say that’s an exaggeration and the content was merely accessible—until, in the end, developer Bungie did not “kill” the servers.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t before spoilers about the story, the raid, the trophies, the loot, and much more—much, much more—flooded social media and online communities. It appears that the content became available after yesterday’s scheduled maintenance.

No spoilers are included in this story.

“The entire DLC is playable right now. If you don’t want spoilers now is your chance to get out of the sub, out of X, out of everything,” said a Destiny 2 player on the official subreddit, titling his post: “CODE RED : SPOILERS COMING DLC LEAKED EVERYWHERE”.

“PC servers killed, Bungie/Sony will attempt full damage control,” read the first update to their post, quickly followed by, “UPDATE 2: This leak trumps everything else. Raid gear, raid mechanics, HUGE STORY SPOILERS. LIKE.. If you don’t like leaks/spoilers, tomorrow will be hell.

According to the poster, players who happened upon the new update were “somehow still online despite the servers being down lmao”.

“Entire campaign available. Seasonal stuff too,” explained the poster.

Eventually, the content was removed from the network again. It’s been speculated, but not definitively confirmed, that players were able to access the new content via a “Sony backend fu*k up” similar to what some used to get a premature peek at the Elden Ring DLC.

At the time of writing, neither Bungie nor Sony have publicly acknowledged the leak.

Last week, Guardians got their first look at—well, listen, technically—Zavala Commander Keith David in Destiny 2: The Final Shape.

We already knew that Bungie had no plans to remove Zavala from the Destiny 2 story since he was “central” to the upcoming The Final Shape expansion, but this is the first time we’re hearing that Zavala is voiced by David. Until now, Zavala’s voice work was pre-recorded by his original voice actor, Lance Reddick, who sadly died last year.
